Snake, a limbless reptile. There are about 2,500 species of snakes. Some inhabit the sea and others live in freshwater, but the majority live on land. Land snakes may burrow in the ground or live in trees or in rocky crevices. In size, snakes range from the 4-inch (10-cm) blind snake to the reticulated python, which may be 30 feet (9 m) or longer. Snakes are often beneficial to humans by killing unwanted insects and rodents. Snake-skins are used to make shoes, handbags, and other articles.
