从前，有一只小鹅，它快乐地生活在大森林里，无忧无虑。
一天，到了生小宝宝的时期，它和姐妹们要生蛋孵宝宝了，姐妹们认为沼泽地里孵宝宝比较安全，于是它便跟随着一起到沼泽地里去。可是小鹅发现沼泽地又湿又冷，它实在熬不住，便向姐妹们告别回到森林里来。
这时，它想：不如自己动手做个窝，可是小鹅回想以前把窝安置在平坦的大路上，结果被狡猾的狐狸趁它不注意的时候偷吃了蛋；小鹅又把窝安置在草丛里，结果又被可恶的蛇把蛋给吃掉。它因此而特别伤心，所以决定自己动手做窝，保护自己的蛋。
因此吸取了两次教训的小鹅认为自己做的太不安全，决定要做一个铁房子。于是，它找到铁匠，对铁匠说：“能给我建一个小铁房子好吗？”“当然可以呀！”铁匠爽快地回答。“不过，我有一个要求，就是我敲一锤，你就下一个蛋。”铁匠接着又说。小鹅想了想，答应了铁匠的要求。
铁匠就开始制作小鹅想要的安全窝，这时铁匠敲一下锤子，小鹅就下一个蛋。铁匠敲了200下，小鹅就下了200个蛋。很快做好了小铁房子；小鹅就住进安全的小铁房中，而且还把自己的蛋安置得很好。由于下蛋太多，劳累了一整天的小鹅非常疲惫，但是看着它的新家和这么多蛋，它可兴奋了！经过一个孵化期，小鹅的宝宝们都出壳了，整天围着它“妈妈，妈妈”地叫，小鹅觉得自己是世界上最幸福的妈妈。
虽然森林里许多又狡猾又阴险的动物都曾经动脑筋想吃掉小鹅一家的坏主意，但是由于小鹅家的房子很坚固，它们都没得逞。现在小鹅与自己的宝宝们过着快乐的生活追问
