--Clint Bowyer's racing career began in Kansas, away from the spotlight. He competed in motocross long before he competed in NASCAR, and he competed on dirt long before he competed on asphalt.

Bowyer's racing roots remain close to his heart. He still likes to race in Kansas and he still likes to race on dirt. He is even building a new body for a dirt car that he hopes to race in his home state later this month.

But during this NASCAR Sprint Cup season, that project has been set aside in favor of a more important one.

"Over probably the last four months," Bowyer said yesterday,Ugg Ultra shorts Boots, "I've put off working on my dirt car for Kansas. So I'm behind on it."

Instead, Bowyer has been focused on reaching the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Ten of the 12 spots have already been claimed for the 10-race playoff, but two have not. Tonight's Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway is the final race before the cutoff, and Bowyer is currently in 12th place with 3,066 points, 117 ahead of 13th-place Ryan Newman.

It is a very comfortable margin for the No. 33 Chevrolet, but it is not insurmountable. Yesterday, Bow-yer alternated between feeling that his Chase berth was locked up and realizing that one unfortunate moment can turn certainty on its head.

Bowyer's route to this point was filled with good fortune. His father owned a towing company in Emporia, Kan., and there was a dirt track nearby. Bowyer started motocross racing when he was 5, and eventually progressed to stock cars.

In 2002, Bowyer was competing in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Midwest. One day that season, the Sprint Cup events in Pocono were rained out, and team owner Richard Childress watched on television as Bowyer placed second at a race in Nashville. Soon after, Childress called Bowyer and offered him a job.

Bowyer qualified for the Chase in 2007 and 2008, but he fell short last year, when he finished 15th. He started this season with three consecutive top-10 finishes and has been a strong candidate to reach the Chase ever since.
